The Australian PhotoJournalist 2010

2010 Australian PhotoJournalist

The Australian PhotoJournalist publication is a project run by the photography department and photo journalist students of the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University. Liveworm has been providing the design of the publication since it’s inception.

The 2010 edition design was created by students Jasmin de la Vega Cruz and Shaelah Ariotti. This edition consisted of twenty photographic ‘stories’ submitted from various photojournalists from around the globe. These stories were all concerned with the theme of this issue: The Rights of the Child and featured photographers Lihee Avidan, Wend Lear, Steve Liss, Lukasz Sokol, Colby Katz, Mariella Furrer, Robin Hammond, Yuri Kozyrev, Paul Fusco, Justin Maxon, Gerd Ludwig, William Daniels, Ed Kashi, G.M.B. Akash, Alfredo Falvo, Annie Tritt, Meredith O’Shea, Michal Novotny, Dana Popa and Jonas Bendiksen. Photojournalist students of QCA contacted these photographers at the beginning of the project, selected and edited the photos provided and contributed introductions to each story.

As each story had it’s own unique subject, history and photographic style, it was decided the design approach had to follow a similar path. Each title page was designed to reflect the story while also holding together as a cohesive publication. To further emphasise the often tactile and gritty subjects and images, a great deal of the design was created using a combination of digital and manual processes. Often a title would be digitally typeset, printed, manually manipulated, rescanned and redigitally manipulated to aquire a suitable treatment. Doing so created a large range of typefaces, textures, shapes and layouts — a visual language unique to this publication.

Griffith University sells the publication at cost price plus shipping. You can purchase this edition of the Australian PhotoJournalist from the following link.

St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital foyer artwork

St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital in Spring Hill have recently upgraded their facilities including a new reception desk featuring a large blank wall. Through our connection with UnitingCare Centre for Social Justice, Liveworm were approached to develop ideas on how to fill this space.

This brief was initially a challenge to students in the studio who had never considered working to this kind of scale and purpose. The resulting ideas were incredibly diverse ranging from multiple light boxes with graphics to hundreds of wooden beams arranged on the wall to create a sculpture of the hospital’s logo.

Student Stephanie Jong had developed a concept of a large scale canvas painting featuring the UnitingCare dove combined with the symbolic poppy flower. The design concept steered clear of using colours from the surrounding interior, preferring a vibrant red to tie in with the poppy theme and to also alert visitors of the desk when they enter. To produce this we converted our meeting room into a temporary painting studio with Stephanie completing coats of paint in between classes. The result and added a real vibrancy and focal point to the busy reception desk area.

Queensland Symphony Orchestra

The Queensland Orchestra made a decision in 2009 to add some more spark and innovation to it’s 2010 season. To coincide, they decided to rename and rebrand the organisation. Liveworm were asked to tackle the problem of developing a new logo which was fresh, modern and dynamic yet appealed to it’s more traditional patrons.

The idea for the design was generated by student Sam Lowth on a visit to a Queensland Orchestra performance at QPAC. She noticed the interesting seating arrangement used and later discovered the format is replicated in all orchestras and has been so for 500 years. Combining this imagery with the vibrancy and energy of the iconic Queensland sun, the new logo for Queensland Symphony Orchestra was complete. The logo design was applied by the Orchestra’s internal design and marketing team.

2009 qdos Awards Branding

QDOS exhibition wall mural

Hosted by the Design Institute of Australia, the Queensland Design on Show (qdos) awards has been recognising and promoting design excellence Queensland since 2002. The awards cover an range of disciplines including three dimensional design, interior design and visual communication design.

Coming on board in 2009 as an industry supporter, Liveworm were tasked with creating a majority of the branding collateral for the event based on the initial direction of ‘electro rock unleashed’ provided by the DIA and Brisbane branding agency Lumino. It was Liveworm’s job to ensure this idea was promoted with the events collateral, which was achieved by combining unexpected photographic treatments and cropping with an array of unusual shapes, colours and textures. The result was a visually energetic and exciting collection of work.

The work undertaken included a finalists and winners catalogue, event invites, tickets and promotional posters, pull up banner displays, a large scale mural for the finalists exhibition and visuals for the winners multimedia display. The collateral range was handled by students Josh Tatarynowicz, Soo Kim and Thembi Hanify.
