POP Gallery

POP Gallery Logo

Liveworm has developed the visual identity for POP Gallery — the new Queensland College of Art gallery space at Woolloongabba for Post Graduate students. The gallery is open from Tuesday to Saturday.

The art-deco themed identity designed by second year student April Turnbull was inspired by the many antique stores in the area. The identity has been applied to signage, stationery and a website.

Queensland Conservatorium 2011 Concert Season collateral

Queensland Conservatorium 2001 Concert Season

Queensland Conservatorium 2001 Concert Season

The Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University is one of Australia’s leading music schools and is based in South Bank very near to the Queensland College of Art. A major publication produced by the Conservatorium each year is their program outlining the highlights of a massive concert season. For the 2011 Season, the Conservatorium chose to engage Liveworm for this task.

Working with an exceptional library of images created by Seesaw Photography, students aimed to create a contemporary yet restrained outcome to appeal to a broad spectrum of concert goers. Student Mikayla Pearce utilised a fold-over cover, uncoated paper stock and die cuts to enhance the overall feeling of the publication. The project spanned several months with the initial concept developed in November 2010 with the publication printed in February 2011. Mikayla managed to handle a vast majority of the project over this time, from meeting with representatives from the Conservatorium to discussing colour tones of the publication ‘on the press’ with printers. She was assisted by fellow student Emily Tunn with the design of the accompanying concert calendar.

For more information about upcoming concerts at the Queensland Conservatorium, follow this link to their website. The entire program is also available to download from there.

Grey Street Mural

South Bank Mural (daytime panels)

South Bank Mural (day and night panels)

A joint project by South Bank Corporation and the nearby Foodworks in South Bank, this mural was commissioned to add more vibrancy to the corner of Grey and Tribune Streets and to cover up some unsightly windows along the footpath. The building is also very near the Queensland College of Art and the entrance to Liveworm studio.

The canvas consisted of four glass window panels which were transformed into vibrant representations of South Bank by day and by night. Early in the design process it was decided that people would not be depicted in the mural — real life pedestrians would serve this purpose when you viewed the work from across the street. This project was completed by final-year student Kenneth Hilton.

The Australian PhotoJournalist 2010

2010 Australian PhotoJournalist

The Australian PhotoJournalist publication is a project run by the photography department and photo journalist students of the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University. Liveworm has been providing the design of the publication since it’s inception.

The 2010 edition design was created by students Jasmin de la Vega Cruz and Shaelah Ariotti. This edition consisted of twenty photographic ‘stories’ submitted from various photojournalists from around the globe. These stories were all concerned with the theme of this issue: The Rights of the Child and featured photographers Lihee Avidan, Wend Lear, Steve Liss, Lukasz Sokol, Colby Katz, Mariella Furrer, Robin Hammond, Yuri Kozyrev, Paul Fusco, Justin Maxon, Gerd Ludwig, William Daniels, Ed Kashi, G.M.B. Akash, Alfredo Falvo, Annie Tritt, Meredith O’Shea, Michal Novotny, Dana Popa and Jonas Bendiksen. Photojournalist students of QCA contacted these photographers at the beginning of the project, selected and edited the photos provided and contributed introductions to each story.

As each story had it’s own unique subject, history and photographic style, it was decided the design approach had to follow a similar path. Each title page was designed to reflect the story while also holding together as a cohesive publication. To further emphasise the often tactile and gritty subjects and images, a great deal of the design was created using a combination of digital and manual processes. Often a title would be digitally typeset, printed, manually manipulated, rescanned and redigitally manipulated to aquire a suitable treatment. Doing so created a large range of typefaces, textures, shapes and layouts — a visual language unique to this publication.

Griffith University sells the publication at cost price plus shipping. You can purchase this edition of the Australian PhotoJournalist from the following link.

St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital foyer artwork

St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital in Spring Hill have recently upgraded their facilities including a new reception desk featuring a large blank wall. Through our connection with UnitingCare Centre for Social Justice, Liveworm were approached to develop ideas on how to fill this space.

This brief was initially a challenge to students in the studio who had never considered working to this kind of scale and purpose. The resulting ideas were incredibly diverse ranging from multiple light boxes with graphics to hundreds of wooden beams arranged on the wall to create a sculpture of the hospital’s logo.

Student Stephanie Jong had developed a concept of a large scale canvas painting featuring the UnitingCare dove combined with the symbolic poppy flower. The design concept steered clear of using colours from the surrounding interior, preferring a vibrant red to tie in with the poppy theme and to also alert visitors of the desk when they enter. To produce this we converted our meeting room into a temporary painting studio with Stephanie completing coats of paint in between classes. The result and added a real vibrancy and focal point to the busy reception desk area.
