Creating visions of connectedness, hope and optimism for a ground breaking recovery-oriented mental health facility.

Project background

In 2025, Liveworm Studio collaborated with Gold Coast Health, Creative Health Hub on the new Gold Coast Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit (SMHRU) at Gold Coast University Hospital.

The $122 million facility was designed as a recovery-focused, home-like environment for people experiencing severe and complex mental health conditions. As part of the project, Liveworm were asked to create two large wall wrap artworks for the family lounge areas, guided by the theme “Connectedness, Hope and Optimism for the Future.”

Design outcome

Students at the Gold Coast studio pitched ten different concepts to the Creative Health Hub team, with the final artworks selected by a larger review panel. Zoe Wenham (left), had her work Harmonious Mountains featured, with Holly Bryant (right) contributing her work Turquoise Dreamscape. Both murals were installed in the unit ahead of its opening in 2025 and contribute to creating calming, supportive spaces where families can spend time together during a patient’s stay.

Zoe’s work proved so popular, an adapted version has also been installed in another Queensland Health facility (CYMHS, Proxima). More recently, Holly Bryant has been selected to design a new artwork of the Treasury Building at Griffith University, opening in 2027.
