Crossbows is a new festival of music produced by the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University focused on performances by small ensembles. Over 4 days the festival will host the likes of Katie Noonan and Elixir, Elision, New Zealand String Quartet, Topology and Clocked Out, Tripod, Southern Cross Soloists, Trichotomy and many more.

Liveworm Scholarship student Herbey Wagner approached the brief with the aim to excite regular Queensland Conservatorium patrons as well as draw in a new audience. A key image and visual language was created and applied across several mediums for the event. Eating Disorders Association Queensland (EDA) approached Liveworm with a plan to develop an informative youth magazine to plug a gap in the information provided to youth in the current education system. The magazine aims to promote positive body image, health, tolerance and personal responsibility and is distributed to year 8 high-school students. Issue #1 was finished towards the end of 2011 and promptly reprinted due to demand in early 2012.

A large range of Liveworm students each tackled various stories within the magazine to create a very diverse, yet vibrant, magazine. Liveworm also designed the accompanying Consume Magazine website to display the magazine online and collect feedack and suggestions from readers.

Every year the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University produces this publication to document their upcoming concert season highlights. Following on from the success of last years collaboration, the Conservatorium again entrusted Liveworm and Seesaw Photography to assist in producing the program for 2012.

Liveworm students Chloe Mantell-Ackroyd and Patricia Kabamba began with the circular visuals used in 2011 and added in their own angle of brighter hues, swirling lights and bold typography to symbolise that the Conservatorium was moving into a vibrant future post-renovation.

Created by scholarship students Meaghan Bailey and Herbey Wagner, this wedding invitation for a friend of the studio featured the above illustration to signify the marriage of the bride and groom (first names starting with ‘G’ and ‘A’).

Creating a sub-brand while working within an existing identity is always a challenging proposition. The direction must be distinctive enough to be seen as different, yet also must fit within set guidelines to remain compliant. The Centre for Communication & Social Change (CfCSC) within The University of Queensland approached Liveworm with this exact challenge.

Student Bonnie McMahon completed the identity and developed photographic colour treatments to be applied to all applications — creating a distinctive look which simultaneously matched and stood out amongst other University of Queensland branded publications.

Congratulations to all of the 2011 QCA Bachelor of Design graduates on completing your studies and putting on the spectacular portfolio exhibition, non parallel, in Brisbane.

Every year we look back at all of the many students who have worked with us and select a student who we feel has gone above and beyond in the studio for this award. This is always a challenging task, made especially difficult by the massive effort and fantastic outcomes of the students here in 2011.

Congratulations to Jessica Wong, the recipient of the 2011 Liveworm Award for Excellence (pictured above receiving her prize in giant cheque form). Jessica spent six months in Liveworm producing a large quantity of excellent work. She demonstrating a high level of conceptual ability, a solid technical skills set and a good sense of humour (even when dealing with tight deadlines).

The Australian PhotoJournalist (APJ) publication is a project run by the photography department and photo journalist students of the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University. Liveworm has been providing the design of the publication since it’s inception.

Work on some of the stories in this edition of the APJ began in 2009 and 2010. These initial ideas and directions were passed on to Danni-elle Cook and Kevin Tuazon in 2011 when all of the images and copy were finalised. This edition consists of photographic sories contributed by various photojournalists from around the globe. These stories were all concerned with the theme of this issue: Epilogue and featured photographers Johnathan Torgovnik, Ziyah Gafic, Dorothee Deiss, Donald Weber, Andrew McConnell, Edward Burtynsky, Brigitte Grignet, Alfonso Moral, Ashley Gilbertson, Alec Soth, Suzanne Opton, Shahidul Alam, Brenda Ann Kenneally, Ilan Godfrey, Abbie Trayler-Smith, Melanie Burford and Jim Goldberg. Photojournalist students of QCA contacted these photographers at the beginning of the project, selected and edited the photos provided and contributed introductions to each story.

The visual style for this edition follows on from the previous Rights of the Child publication (by students Jasmin de la Vega Cruz and Shaelah Ariotti). The design features an array of hand created typography and interesting textural treatments — all created during an intense but rewardingly experiemental few months in the studio.

The publication won a bronze medal in the perfect bound books catagoriy for our printer The Buckner Group in the 2011 Queensland Printing Industries Craftsmanship (PICA) Awards. The edition was printed on HannoArt Silk paper stock by KW Doggett Fine Paper.

2011 marked the first year of the Musical Theatre course within the Bachelor of Music program at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University. This first cohort of students were involved with this production, run less than six months after beginning the course.

After a fruitless search for a suitable hand written typeface, student Jessica Wong decided the best option would be to handwrite all text using a felt tipped marker. This aesthetic was combined with photos of a fellow students and bright, bold colours to create a vibrant, youthful yet professional set of collateral.

Liveworm were asked to develop a logo design for local covers and original music band Manilows. Referencing a guitar pick to symbolise the classic rock style of the Brisbane-based band, Erin Bishara created a simple yet recognisable icon for the band to use.

The UnitingCare Centre for Social Justice approached Liveworm to assist with the production of a series of reports outlining often overlooked issues within the community and the position UnitingCare takes on them. The series includes papers on asylum seeker treatment, aged care funding, regional funding, restrictive practices and financial counselling.

The report design undertaken by Liveworm incorporates easy to read layouts combined with engaging cover illustrations with the intention of standing out amongst the many reports in front of policy makers and other stakeholders. This project features illustrations by students Veronika Plant and Maggie Webster with design and layout by Emma Brownson.

Griffith Enterprise run the Creative Short Courses program during the year in both the South Bank and Gold Coast campuses of the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University. These courses are designed as introductory classes to interested members of the public or additional education for people within creative industries.

Each year Liveworm has designed the look and feel for the promotional booklet and associated promotion. In 2011, the booklet has also been expanded to include some of the upcoming exhibitions in the Griffith University and POP Galleries. To accommodate this duel purpose, Jessica Wong designed a booklet that could be read front-to-back and back-to-front, depending on which area you were interested in. The booklet was printed on Revive Laser, a 100% post-consumer recycled Australian made paper.

The Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University approached Liveworm to develop promotional collateral for a very special upcoming concert featuring operatic soprano Lisa Gasteen, her first in several years. The invitation to such an event needed to grab attention — achieved by using a classic gold foil typographic formation over a deep purple background. This outcome was designed by student Yu-Ting Lin.

Vegan Era run a portal website promoting the ecological and ethical benefits of undertaking a Vegan diet and lifestyle. The organisation approached Liveworm to help develop a billboard design promoting the Vegan lifestyle as a positive contributer for a more sustainable environment due to the reduced consumption of resources to sustain it. The challenge set was how to communicate this quickly and how to interest people enough to visit the website for more information. The above solution was created by student Emma Brownson.

The billboard is situated on the Bruce Highway near Traverston, Queensland and will be up for the entire month of April, 2011. Vegan Era’s website contains more information on the Vegan lifestyle and its positive effects on a persons ecological footprint.
